Dwyer's Cafe Review Lafayette

Dwyers Cafe

The Good
  • Huge portions
  • Tasty food
  • Inexpensive
The Bad
  • Boring experience

Damn good plate lunches. You can really summarize Dwyers in that sense. I’ll admit it early, I’ve yet to visit this place for breakfast, but I’ve been for lunch quite a few times. Every time I’ve ordered a plate lunch, it’s always been delicious. The most recent trip I made to Dwyers was for some beef stew. The gravy was rich and thick, the meat was very tender, and the flavor was good. It could have been spicier, but perhaps that just personal preference. It was still a good meal. I ordered it with green beans and mashed potatoes. The green beans were a little salty, as were the potatoes, but they were still pretty good. The employee serving me the food asked, “would you like gravy on your mashed potatoes?” That’s like asking me if I like oxygen. Hell yeah I do. The meal was huge, filling, tasty, and only set me back about $8. I was impressed with this Lafayette staple all over again.

This is one of the downsides to eating here. The restaurant is pretty boring. The interior is kind of bland, but does have a lot of cool old pictures of history. Overall, I don’t really consider this the kind of place that’s worried about it’s atmosphere. It’s just a old school Louisiana eatery that pumps out some great food. They’re not too worried about the look, as they’re more worried about the food. I wouldn’t suggest this place for a lunch date though. That’s the truth.

You can get things to order, but the plate lunches are usually the best option. Especially if you’re on a time constraint. If you take your food to go, you can likely get in and out of that place in 5 minutes flat. If you’re looking to order something fresh, it’ll still come out pretty quick. I ordered a burger a few months back and it came out in about 10-12 minutes. Speed seems to be a commonality here. Much respect for the place for sticking to a great gameplan like that.

The service has always been great. I’ve never had a bad experience at this place when it comes to the service, whether tableside or not. The gentleman that made my plate lunch the other day was great and even told a joke or two while putting my meal together. The cashier, at my most recent visit, wasn’t the kindest person, but she was doing her job well enough for me not to notice. It wasn’t an unpleasant experience because of it either.

Aside from the boring dining room and some of the food being slightly salty, this is a great place to get a good lunch. I can’t say I’ve had the breakfast in recently enough to touch on whether or not it’s good, but if they give enough care to the breakfast as they do the lunches, then it should be good. This place get’s a strong B in my opinion. I will be going back. Expect a breakfast update from me in the coming days.
