Bon Temps Shrimp and GritsThe food at Bon Temps Grill is damn good. I mean really good. I definitely had a couple of complaints, but they are minor for the most part. We started the meal with the shrimp and grits. There was only 5 shrimp on the dish, which wasn’t too bad considering the size of the shrimp. The size of the scoop of grits was pretty small considering the amount of sauce and shrimp. I felt like there should have been a little more along with it. The flavor of the butter sauce was fantastic and complimented the grits really well. My biggest complaint about the sauce was that there were quite a lot of shrimp antenna present. More than there would have been for the actual shrimp in the appetizer itself. It was still delicious.

I have bad news about the burger that I ordered. I didn’t like it, but I think it was my mistake. As you know, I feel like a burger is one of the best things that a cook can make to truly show the skill of a kitchen. I understand that making a burger isn’t the hardest thing, but making a good burger is a little harder to do. I ordered a BBQ burger, which usually isn’t my first choice, but it came at the recommendation of the server. The burger had fried onion strings on it, which I didn’t end up liking. The cheese on it was a Gouda, so the smokiness was there and complimented the burger. The BBQ sauce was not that good and didn’t leave an impression on me at all. All that being said, the meat was very well-seasoned was cooked well. I ordered it medium and it was cooked correctly. The fries were pretty good as well. Homemade wedges and they were fantastic. I enjoyed the food, but had a couple of complaints. That’s a pretty accurate summary.

Bon Temps InteriorI’m going to start out with the biggest complaint I have about this place. The dining room is very small. There is barely any elbow room. The server had to stand so close to us during the order that I had to crane my neck to look high enough to see her face. That’s not her fault, there is just no room. The dining room is well-decorated, clean, and designed nicely. It was still too small, but looked great. Wooden walls and relatively comfy seats. The experience at Bon Temps wasn’t too bad, but needs some work.

Bon-Temps-burgerThe kitchen was slightly slow, but not to unacceptable levels. That was only for the entrees as well. The appetizer came out very fast. The server was great about meal pacing and I even ordered a couple of beers that came out lightning fast. Never a bad thing to get a beer too quickly. We were sat quickly as well, but the hostess stand was something made me wonder. The place was pretty small and there weren’t that many tables in there, but there were still 2 hostesses. Look, don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not complaining about getting seating quickly, but it seemed strange to have two hostesses for such a small place. Don’t read too far into this, I’m certainly not marking off points. It seemed strange to me.

Two words… excellent service. There’s no doubt in my mind that the owner of this place has really gone out of his way to make sure that good servers are employed. The busser was really friendly and offered us more bread. The hostesses were smiling, friendly, and great at their job. The server was friendly, talkative, jovial, and made the experience worth it all. Seriously, I was very impress with the level of service at this place. I will likely go back to try and get an experience like this again. Perfect score here.

Bon Temps Grill is a great place to get a bite. I know I’ll likely get some flack for not ordering a more traditional Cajun dish at a place like this, but that was the purpose of the shrimp and grits. I got the best of both worlds. I got the shrimp and grits to show off the Cajun side of things, and the burger to show off the overall skill of the kitchen. Win win in my opinion. This is a great place to eat. There’s no doubt about it. They have a couple of flaws, but they can all be overlooked for such a great experience. I hope they open a larger dining room one day, because that might make this place one of the best places to eat in Lafayette. Big points to Bon Temps. I cannot wait to go back.
