A 1950’s styled American diner with food of the similar vein. The menu is large and has a great selection of different items. Burgers, breakfast fare, sandwiches, a few cajun dishes, and more. I’ve had quite a lot on this menu because I used to live very close to this location. I’ve had burgers, hotdogs, chili cheese fries, steak, chicken fried steak, and a lot more. It’s all good stuff. It’s especially good in a pinch if you want a quick bite that’s really inexpensive. I haven’t had anything at Mel’s that’s been gross, but I haven’t had anything that’s blew my mind.

It’s a 50’s style diner and they really hit the mark with the decor. Everything is very retro. The walls are covered in art from the time period and there are cool red neon lights all over the place. The dining room is small and vey tightly packed. There isn’t much elbow room, which is one of my biggest complaints about this location. Here’s my one and only warning: if you have a late night hankering for some food and see this place, be prepared to be surrounded by drunk people. This is a late night spot for the post-bar crowd to go and get their hangover started. Other than that, it’s pretty tame there.

My wait time has varied from taking a really long time, to coming out quick as hell. I know what I’m getting myself into when I go to Mel’s so my expectations are set pretty low. I had to wait a long time on a burger once or twice, but I think the variation in the cook might be the cause. No excuses, but the variation is almost unavoidable for most restaurants.

The servers are all veterans in the business, from what I can tell, and they usually are pretty good about servicing my table quickly and efficiently. I’ve had a couple of experiences where the server was clearly being spread too thinly, so the service standard suffered because of it. Once again, I know what I’m getting myself when I go there, but that’s no excuse.

Mel’s is a great place for a late night bite or a early morning breakfast. It’s not perfect, but if you go here, you’ll understand why I’m not holding it to such a high expectation. I still rate it by Fatso standards, but that doesn’t mean I don’t recommend it. I say give it a shot if you’re looking for a cheap bite in a fun atmosphere.
