Greek food is not usually my thing. I believe I got food poisoning from a Zeus during my college years, and it’s kind of turned me off of Greek food for a good while. My co-workers turned me on to this place because they have a lunch buffet, which as it turns out is pretty damn good. The gyro is pretty good. They even have some of shrimp dish that goes well on the rice. Fried fish, a great salad bar, and a few other things make for a nice bit of food that you can fill up on. I’ll admit, I was impressed by the food there. I enjoyed it.
The dining room is really really packed. That’s my biggest complaint. You better hope you don’t sit next to someone who stinks, because it’s not going to be a pleasant experience if so. The restaurant has some sort of Greek food store within it, so it’s quite an odd and eclectic place to be. Having a few food shelves next to you while you eat is odd, but sort of charming in it’s own way. I wish they would remove some of the shelves and put some more tables in there to give more room to the diners, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.
It’s a buffet, so the food is not a problem when it comes to the timeliness of the place, but the food gets refilled pretty quickly whenever a dish has been emptied. The pace of the restaurant is solid, even though it’s pretty busy during the lunch rush. One of my co-workers ordered something from the menu instead of getting the buffet, and her meal appeared to come out in good time. They seem to be able to handle the lunch rush pretty easily.
I’ve never had bad service at Athena’s. I’ve always been happy with how quickly we were greeted, how nicely we were treated, and how fast I got my refills and whatnot. The service is on point, and from what I can tell, the servers all seem to have it together. There isn’t really much to say on it. I’ve never been completely wowed by the service, but never been disappointed either.
Athena’s is a great lunch spot to get full on some Greek fair. The food is solid, the service hasn’t disappointed, and the overall experience has been great. I’d recommend this place over some of the other Greek joints in Lafayette. The dining room is a little too packed for me, but other than that, it’s a good experience. Check them out.
