I’ll sum up this section in four words. Typical Tex Mex Food. Seriously, we have a ton of Mexican places around town, so it baffles me that there are three of these places around town. THREE! What?! Why?! It makes no sense. All the sheeple in this town sure do love some mediocre tex mex. It’s not different, there’s no flair, there’s no reason to go. They have a traditional Mexican section of their menu. Last I checked, most Mexican’s don’t eat “Extreme Burrito’s” for their Sunday lunch. I’ve eaten a few things at Agave. Fajita’s aren’t too bad. The enchiladas are not good. Salsa is okay. Everything is just pretty basic. Typical tex mex.
Well, they try really hard, I’ll give them that. The atmosphere isn’t too bad. They keep the colors very rustic and Mexican looking, so that’s a nice aspect of it. They have a fair bit of art on the walls. The tables are laid out well enough to give everyone some breathing room. The dining room in general feels generic, but they clearly made a conscience effort to make it look nice. The staff is required to wear branded shirts, so that helps a lot as well.
This aspect of Agave is hit or miss. Seriously, I’ve had meals take 35 minutes here, but also had some that take as little as 10 minutes. I’m not sure if it’s fully dependant on the kitchen staff that day, or strictly on how busy the place is. Luckily, if I’m with a particularly hungry group, the chips and salsa get filled relatively quickly by the server or the runner, so that helps a lot. There hasn’t been anything that’s really impressed me about the pacing of a meal.
I’ve only had one bad server out of the times I’ve been to Agave. I will give them that. The servers are usually on point and friendly. I’ve also had one or two servers during a couple of lunch visits that weren’t rude, but they just weren’t friendly either. I will say this though, none of the servers have ever really gone above and beyond to impress us.
Typical tex mex is accurate still. Agave has a lot of loyal followers in Lafayette. But then again, Lafayette doesn’t really have a particularly good Mexican place. We’re lacking heavily in that department. I would say that La Pagua is the only thing that comes close, but even they are pretty basic as well.
