Zea Review Lafayette LA

The Good
  • Amazing food
  • Corn grits
  • Daily specials
The Bad
  • Slow kitchen
  • Small bar area

I’ll preface this review by stating it early. I love Zea. I’ve never had a bad meal from there. The food is always delicious. I’ve also had many different meals from there as well. I’ve had the Thai ribs, the daily specials, the veal, the duck empanadas, the hummus, the spinach dip, the steak medallions, and a few other things that I probably skipped over. Seriously, everything I’ve eaten at Zea’s has been really delicious. Not to mention they have their own micro-brewed beers now and those are damn good as well. Seriously, this has to be one of my favorite places in town, if that wasn’t clear enough.

This place has got a really great balance of everything. The lighting can be romantic or light hearted. I enjoy the decor, it’s primarily dark and heavy woods. I can appreciate that because it’s not too distracting. Many times that I go in there, I see the same staff, which goes to show that it’s probably a great place to work if servers last so long. If you’ve ever waited tables, you’ll know about the turnover rate. My biggest complaint is that I wish the bar area was a little larger, especially when you have to wait to be seated sometimes and it gets packed in there.

Every place has it’s faults, and this is unfortunately one of them. It’s not bad when you’re on a date or something and you want to spend time with your company. The slower paced meals can sometimes be a welcomed thing. On the other hand, when you have to catch a movie at the Grand 16 right behind the restaurant, when the time on the meal surpasses 45 minutes, it can get stressful for the movie you have in about 30 minutes. Bare in mind, this has only happened to me once, but considering the looks on some of the other diners when it was happened, it was likely happening to them as well. Every giant has a weak spot, and this is likely Zea’s main one.

I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad server at Zea before. The servers all seem to be vets and have been in the business for a long time, or just at Zea for some time as well. Either way, most of the servers I have had are knowledgeable, friendly, fast, and on point. I’m happy to give the perfect 20 for service at Zea. I used to be a server myself, so I’m pretty harsh on this category most of the time. That’s why even I was impressed that I liked it this much.

Zea is easily one of the best restaurant experiences in the city of Lafayette. Seriously, it’s great. The food is delightful, the service is exceptionally good, and the restaurant is just a great place to be. They have great drink specials and a awesome daily specials as well. I suggest this place for a great date or lunch meal. I know that kids are usually okay for this place, but I wouldn’t consider it as “kid friendly” as others. I love me some Zea. Fatso approved big time.
